Stay humble, for you are made of earth. Stay noble, for you are made of stars. Serbian Proverb
Humble Warrior Pose
Humble Warrior is one of those poses that makes me feel amazing. I totally encourage you to incorporate it into your flow or routine. It’s a full body pose that requires multiple systems of the body to work together. It works your legs while opening up through your shoulders and arms. I have really tight shoulders from years of sports (volleyball, tennis, softball), and the shoulder stretch in this pose feels amazing.
Its also a posture steeped in symbolic meaning. A humble warrior is powerful, strong and fierce, yet composed, balanced, and graceful. A humble warrior has both the physical and moral high ground. Strong legs represent the warrior, but the heart-opener and the deep bow adds vulnerability and humility.
Start in Warrior One: Your front foot should point straight ahead, your back heel kicked out to roughly 45 degrees. Lunge deeply into your front leg, while keeping your back leg straight, pressing your hips forward in line with your shoulders.
On an inhale, clasp your hands together behind you. Draw your arms toward straight – its OK if they don’t straighten all the way. Work on pressing the heels of your hands towards one another. Lift your heart up, pressing your knuckles down.
Exhale, bow deeply, allowing your head and shoulders to fall to the inside of your front knee. Keep the deep lunge in your front leg, while pressing into the outer edge of your back foot to keep your back leg strong. Work on lifting your arms up overhead, still pressing your arms toward straight and drawing the heels of the hands together.
Take a few breaths here. Relax your head and neck down.
